Nowhere near good enough

This revelation is enough to make anyone despair at the duplicity of our judges. If ever there was a need for ‘truth in sentencing” in is to be found in the cases of terrorists like Roche.

a scumbag who should serve his full sentence.THE convicted terrorist Jack Roche, who conspired with members of al-Qaeda to bomb the Israeli embassy in Canberra, will be released from prison in three weeks after serving four years behind bars.

Despite receiving a nine-year jail term, which was deemed to have started when he was arrested in late 2002, Roche will be released on May 18 under a Commonwealth law that forces the authorities to release prisoners on parole as soon as they have served their minimum term.

The Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, can refuse parole only to offenders sentenced to 10 years or more in jail.(source)

Time to change the law so that prisoners actually have to be worthy of release, when they have done the minimum, rather than have it guaranteed.
