How Fairfax reports the news

Charming description - but it could have been worse

I love living in the north-east of Victoria. I mean, where else would you see a headline like this one, as appears in today’s Border Mail, an Albury-based (no surprises there!) – and Fairfax owned – daily?

The BM is the only local daily paper circulating in these parts and apparently, according to them or Fairfax, it’s okay up this way to describe people as “FAT” but not as …… read on:

An anonymous caller told police a man matching the escapee’s appearance had been seen in Albury Street at Tumbarumba.

Police searched the area on foot and by car without success.

The escapee is described as about 176-centimetre tall, overweight and of Aboriginal appearance.

He has a cross tattooed on his lower left arm and short black hair with a tuft towards the back of his head.

He is wearing green prison garb with white runners.

Anyone who sees a man matching the escapee’s appearance is urged to contact Albury police immediately on (02) 6023 9299.

Police have warned the public not to approach the man.

I guess a headline that read: “Fat, tattooed, mohawked black man …. “ would be going a tad too far.

LMAO.

UPDATE:  The Border Mail has changed the online heading and, instead, released a photo of the jailbreaker, which is self-descriptive (above the shoulders only – no fat gut in sight). I have a lot of pull with our local media.

UPDATE #2:

The “fat” jailbreaker is still on the run and this is now looking serious. Seems he attempted to abduct a 5 y.o. :

Police believe Ryan might be near Dubbo and driving a white 1993 Mitsubishi Triton with registration plates SPV 999.

He is described as Aboriginal appearance, 20, 177 centimetres tall with a medium build and black hair which is shaved on both sides.

Christ, if this guy is mobile he could be headed anywhere. I’m keeping the doors locked. But … MEDIUM BUILD ??? WTF? Oh well, good to see the BM has dropped the “FAT” description!!!

The Chainsaw cure for FGM!

There is absolutely no reason at all to allow Australian doctors to mutilate the genitals of girls to appease the barbaric desires of any immigrant group.

AUSTRALIAN doctors are considering a controversial form of genital mutilation on baby girls.

The practice involving cutting a girl’s genitals, sometimes with razors or pieces of glass, could be allowed in a clinical setting to stem illegal backyard procedures which are leaving young girls scarred for life.

The Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians will next month discuss backing “ritual nicks”, a modified form of genital mutilation.

But experts are divided on whether to allow the practice, given that in some cultures it is used to remove the sexual feelings of women.

Female genital mutilation has been outlawed in Australia since the 1990s but is common among African, Asian and Middle Eastern communities.

This suggestion is PC madness!!!

Frankly anyone who allows their daughters to be so mutilated should be charged with child abuse, have their children removed from them and maybe then  they should also have their own genitals mutilated with a chain saw!

It makes me MAD Comrades!

we have to buy halal because we have some Muslim children in the school”.

This story is a typical example of , probably well meaning, political correctness enthusiasts making public institutions like our schools compliant with Islamic dietary dogma even though Muslims are only a tiny proportion of the school population.By their logic perhaps they should be making all  school barbecues vegetarian affairs because they surely have some vegetarian students, Oh hang on, perhaps they should just stop barbecues altogether because they might have some Anorexic students and they don’t want to offend them by offering anything that is like , gasp, food…

Members of the school’s Parents and Friends Association believed they were being inclusive when they ordered halal-only sausages for last month’s barbie.

But some parents thought it was political correctness gone mad to offer only halal meat.

Parent Diane Rees said yesterday that she was outraged when told by the PFA that “we have to buy halal because we have some Muslim children in the school”.

“I said to the principal, ‘I think you’re discriminating against the majority of the school and appeasing the minority by only serving halal,’ ” she said. “It’s not fair on my children that they can’t eat at the school.”
Ms Rees said she wasn’t anti-Muslim – her concern was over the way animals were killed under the halal method, which involves a knife cut to the jugular veins and carotid arteries in the neck.

“They take two long minutes to die and I think that’s bloody cruel,” she said.

But Australian Federation of Islamic Councils president Ikebal Patel said research showed that, done properly, halal was a quick and humane slaughter of animals.

“I think they are using the issue of some halal sausages at a barbecue, for God’s sake, to bring out their own xenophobic bigotry,” he said.

“It was very thoughtful of the parents and friends association to try to cater for Muslims. I think they (the critics) need to get real and get a life on this one.”

School principal David Kilmartin, who has been in the job for only a month, said halal-only barbecues were not school policy and the PFA had been told to provide a choice of meat in the future.

“I don’t think it was done with any malice. I’m assuming there would have been requests from Muslim families to have halal meat,” he said.

Although I have previously expressed concern about the place of ritual slaughter in the preparation of meat I firmly believe that every one should follow their conscience and their taste when it comes to what they eat, but any group of people who seek to impose a set of dietary rules from a religion upon people who do not share that faith are doing no service to that faith or their followers.

After all who has ever heard of a halal pork sausage?

Invasive grant questions

Organisations applying for grants are being asked to state how many board members are bisexual, homosexual, heterosexual, lesbian or whose inclinations are “not known”. Audrey Roy, the director of grants, said that the council needed to understand who its audience was and to whom its funding was going. “We see diversity as broader than race, ethnicity, faith and disability,” she said. Question 22 of the Grants for the Arts forms, relating to sexual orientation, was not compulsory, she added, although the form states that it must be answered.

The Times

The hoops that you have to jump through to secure government grants can be so onerous that organisations have to devote a great deal of their administration budgets just to securing them and then meeting the reporting provisions. But this report from the UK is a great example of small minded bureaucrats invading every aspect of life to try to manipulate society to their own particular utopian vision.

Put simply this is just another example of Political Correctness gone mad.
