Further revelations of Public Trustee of Queensland’s gouging of estates

The Public Trustee of Queensland is a public body charged with managing the finances of some of the most vulnerable members of the community, including those lacking capacity and prisoners.

The ABC has now again reported on the Public Trustee, this time in relation to its mismanagement and fee gouging of estates.

Cora Whitfort appointed the Public Trustee as executor of her estate when she made her will back in 2011.  She passed away six years later in 2017.

It took two years  and cost the estate more than $20,000 for the Public Trustee to obtain probate.

Three steps forward and a tiny step back

The ABC has always been on the top of my TV hit parade and I follow its machinations with some interest so when I hear that it is axing any program I take note, However I can’t help but think that the most recent announcement does not represent a total  backward step for Auntie

In an email to staff, ABC director of TV Kim Dalton confirmed a number of changes to its TV schedule slate and production resources. “These are a result of falling audiences for some programs, increasing financial pressures on ABC TV and a strategic commitment to focus its limited financial resources on prime-time programming,” he wrote. They include the axing of New Inventors and Art Nation, the resting of Collectors, to be replaced by a new show from the same Tasmanian production team, Auctions. Mr Dalton told The Australian ABC TV was under financial pressure while its funding had remained static.

He said ABC TV’s ancillary revenue was down due to the bottom falling out of the DVD market while program acquisition costs had risen by up to 30 per cent due to multi-channel competition. He added poor ratings were behind the axing of New Inventors and Art Nation and he committed to further increases in arts programming in prime time on both ABC1 and ABC2.

Of the three programs that are being axed the only one that will be much of a loss to the viewing public will be The Collectors and even that probably won’t be missed for very long. In particular I have long thought that “Arts Nation” to be a bit of pretentious and sycophantic crap that was a total waste of air time, re-runs of Play School would be more entertaining for grown-ups on a Sunday afternoon than trite advertaorals for some art exhibition or “right on ” dance company that no one wants to see or watch.

A glimpse of Bess Price’s world

Although I’m just a simple whitefella I am very concerned about the plight of our indigenous people which is why I have written about the topic on a fairly regular basis here at the Sandpit. It is also the reason that I have been rather scathing of the lefties who have done such a great disservice to the most disadvantaged Australians by focusing on a rights agenda rather than seeking good practical outcomes and a real future for the original inhabitants of this wide brown land. This has led me to respect and admire people like Noel Pearson and Bess Price. It is the latter that I want to highlight today.

I was lying in bed early this morning listening to Radio National when the repeat of “Background briefing” came on. Please listen at my link or read the transcript for a most sensible argument about what has to be done to give the first people of this country a chance at being part of the future rather than a sad footnote from our past. Clearly its not the rights agenda driven aborigines by choice who are going to provide salvation for those desperate people in remote Australia, its people like Bess Price who understand that not every part of Indigenous culture should be immutable or given undue deference in the face of modernity.

Humourless lefties

Why is it the case that the gormless lefties are so insensitive to anyone who has children? probably because most of them are at heart just pimply faced morons like the subject of this piece who  tries to defend the indefensible

THE Chaser’s War on Everything has been taken off the air for two weeks to allow the ABC to review its approval processes after the row over the dying kids skit.

ABC managing director Mark Scott made the decision with ABC’s director of television Kim Dalton after discussions with the Chaser team.

“We have decided that this is the most appropriate course of action,” Mr Scott said in a statement on Friday night.

“It gives the ABC an opportunity to complete a review of editorial approval processes.

“It also gives The Chaser a chance to regroup and review their material.”

ABC viewers flooded the broadcaster’s website with complaints after the satirical program aired a skit on Wednesday night that depicted dying children making deathbed wishes.

The segment, titled Making A Realistic Wish Foundation, ended with actor Chris Taylor saying there was no point in making expensive wishes come true as “they’re going to die anyway”.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the Chaser team was guilty of extremely poor taste and should “hang their heads in shame”.

Mr Scott has apologised for the distress caused and admitted the skit went too far.

The ABC have done the right thing here because there are some things that are just in such bad taste that only the most demented lefty could find them funny. Such things have no place on the public broadcaster. Sadly the Chaser boys have reached their use by date and their stuff is just no longer funny. A wise comedian would realise when they have come to this state of affairs. That crowd are in that long African river and they have been spied by the hungry crocodile of public disgust.

Cheers Comrades

“But the stories about global warming have not stopped, not for a second.”

Not So long ago the media was insisting that we are all going to fry as the world spirals into an out of control heating phase all caused by our greed and rapacious burning of fossil fuels. Sadly fro the zealots, the ones I call the “Warministas” the empirical evidence does not fit their song sheet. Although someone should tell the ABC and Fairfax because they are doing a very good job of under emphasising those “inconvenient truths” that do not fit the AGW song sheet

EUROPE is shivering through an extreme cold snap. One of the coldest winters in the US in more than 100 years is toppling meteorological records by the dozen, and the Arctic ice is expanding. Even Australia has been experiencing unseasonable snow.

But the stories about global warming have not stopped, not for a second.

In May last year, The Sydney Morning Herald breathlessly reported that climate change had reduced the Southern Ocean’s ability to soak up carbon dioxide, claiming that as a result global warming would accelerate even faster than previously thought.

The story was picked up and repeated in a number of different journals around the region.

But this week the CSIRO suggested the exact opposite. “The new study suggests that Southern Ocean currents, and therefore the Southern Ocean’s ability to soak up carbon dioxide, have not changed in recent decades,” it said. This time the story got no coverage in the SMH, and was run on the ABC’s website as evidence the Southern Ocean was adapting to climate change.

CSIRO oceanographer Stuart Rintoul, a co-author of the study, said it did not disprove global warming and he did not believe its lack of an alarmist tone was responsible for the poor coverage.

I truly wonder just how long the cooling trend in our climate will have to be evident before the true believers will have their certianty undermined enough that they would consider that their faith in prophets like Hansen , Gore and Flannery has been misplaced?

Something to think about Comrades
