A shortage of idiots undermines emission trading schemes

Advocates here insist that the Gillard scheme will be a valuable tool in the fight against the scourge of Anthropogenic Global Warming  I have never been convinced that it will do anything that its advocates claim and I  have repeatedly suggested that its little more than a scam. This post has but one purpose and that is to point out the folly of  “emission trading schemes” and to show just how easily they become  little more than a shambolic fraud. One only has top look to the European scheme to see what we can expect from the one created by the Gillard government:

Of course my quote above does not tell the whole story but it is a good example of how these schemes rely upon what can only be described as “clever accounting” to create the pretence of efficacy. To be honest I can see how such an indirect method to change industrial behaviour  can ever truly work because it is all based upon the “bigger idiot  principal”*  and just as that sees the collapse of ponzi schemes it is seeing the collapse of the European emissions trading scheme as well:

Its a far from pretty picture in Europe and the only light in the antipodean    climate darkness is that the Coalition have promised to repeal the idiotic regime created to placate the loopy Greens by a desperate Julia Gillard. Now if only the incoming Abbott government would have the courage to also ditch the majority of their own pointless scheme the country would be truly free of the AGW madness .

*the bigger idiot principle is essential in all kinds of derivative trading schemes it is the underlying belief that any commodity can  be sold at a profit if only enough people can be convinced to buy into the scheme. It is fine until the supply of idiots runs out.

Another Carbon abatement Ponzi scheme on the verge of collapse

I have been a bit under the weather over the last few days, in fact I have had a sort of flu like symptoms for the last week, you know with a sinus headache and a general feeling of utter lethargy. On top of that joyous present from my son I have been having a rather bad patch with my back.  that has seen my doctor prescribe me some even stronger pain medication and to be honest it makes be feel like I’m a bit “off with the fairies” sometimes. In fact my interest in politics has been a bit subdued lately. Oh I have been fighting the good fight a bit  in Latte land and now I think its time to offer a new post here to the loyal readers of the Sandpit. So without further adieu I’m going to consider the viability of the UN sponsored “global carbon trading scheme”. The Guardian is of course one of the most partisan and pro AGW papers  on the planet so lets have a look at the report in the latest edition:

What I am struck by upon reading this article is an inescapable feeling that the whole UN scheme is, like the Gillard monstrosity just another Ponzi scheme where its all about  creating “confidence”  but because that confidence is predicated on false expectations and and eternally growing pool of “investors”  the whole thing is bound to fail sooner rather than later:

Governments have a last chance to restore confidence in the system when they meet in Qatar this December to discuss climate change. But few participants hold out any hope that they will agree to toughen their 2020 emissions targets, which are scarcely even on the agenda. Instead, governments are focusing on drawing up a new climate change treaty by the end of 2015, which would stipulate emissions cuts for the period after 2020.

As I have been saying for ages if the response to AGW can not be made to happen at a truly global level then any efforts from a minority of the global emitters is at best pointless and futile. At worst it will be an expensive exercise in climate piety that is of no value what so ever. There is only one answer to the AGW question that is to do nothing, wait and see if any of the dire prognostications come to pass and if they do then we deal with each  problem as it actually presents itself rather than spending huge amounts of effort and treasure trying to forestall things that may never happen.

Julia Gillard’s “golden shower” on the people of Australia

Saw this comment over at our learned friend’s blog and I just loved the analogy and found the idea of the carbon tax as a “golden shower” on the people of Australia so apt that I just had to share it with the Sandpit’s readers.

As fatiguing as it is to again remind people, Gillard did actually promise a Carbon Price.

Narc – for the record “Carbon Price” is a generic term that captures a range of carbon pricing policies including carbon taxes, emission trading schemes and a range of other policies.

Putting it in terms SB would enjoy, what Gillard has done is a bit like saying to someone “I will probably spray you with liquid at some future time but I promise it won’t be a golden shower”, and then when you are caught actually pissing on them offering the defence that you were always clear that you were going to spray them with a liquid.

Yes Gillard always proposed a Carbon Price, but she was explicit in her promise that the form of carbon pricing policy she adopted wouldn’t be a carbon tax.

The Green Tithe

For the faithful of religion it is not unusual to to dedicate a certain percentage of your income to the Church so that it may carry on its charitable works, build churches that are worthy of the glory of God and of course to ensure that the professional clergy are in receipt of an adequate stipend.

“Low-income households spend a greater proportion of their income on basic necessities . . . and will, therefore, be disproportionately affected,” he said.

“Petrol and food prices will rise as a result of the emissions trading scheme’s coverage of emissions from transport, energy and, eventually, fertiliser and livestock.

He advised the Government to lower the marginal tax rate for those on lower incomes and provide $1000 grants for low-income households to buy energy-efficient products. He also recommended the private sector be paid $150 to carry out energy-efficient audits for low-income households and that the Government’s $20 billion Building Australia Fund be extended to cover energy infrastructure.

Joint Garnaut/Treasury modelling released yesterday predicted that cuts of 10 per cent (or stabilising CO2 levels at 550 parts per million in the atmosphere) would increase residential electricity prices by 21 per cent.

At 25 per cent (or 450 ppm), it would send residential electricity prices soaring 37 per cent.

Professor Garnaut warned that Australia could not make overly-ambitious cuts without a global agreement.

“On the balance of probabilities, the failure of our generation on climate change mitigation would lead to consequences that would haunt humanity until the end of time,” he said.

Anyone looking at the proposals from that most reverend gentleman, Professor Ross Garnaut, can not help but conclude that his scheme really amounts to a sort of green tithe upon all of the people of Australia. We will all have to pay a premium upon every good and every service we buy. We will all have to contribute to the coffers of the Green Faith even if we do not subscribe to  the religion.
Worse still as the prophets tell us that global co-operation is necessary for salvation and the faith has not made sufficient inroads into the hoards of unbelievers in China ,India , The United States and all of the third world we are all doomed anyway, so no amount of piety on our part is going to make a blind bit of difference if the tenants of the green faith are true.
Add to that the current ructions in the church of Mammon that are encouraging acts of great religious fury and panic as the high lords of that faith are undone by the legacy of their own ineptitude and greed. Which means that the worlds economy is even less likely to embrace the penance demanded by the prophets of Giaia. Still the true believers are a determined bunch and they will probably see this new Tithe enshrined in law so that we the long suffering and sensible will have to pay the money and being assured all of the time that if we don’t that natural wonders like the great barrier reef will be destroyed (as a punishment for our own lack of faith) Our farm lands will be blighted (even though no amount of piety and dedication to the faith here will be enough to make up for the 98.7% of the rest of the worlds emissions that will remain in the thrall of disbelief) I suppose that in the end the Green faith is no different to any other that promises a place in heaven for the pious and that the only difference is that instead of papal indulgences for our sins we will just have to pay for carbon credits instead.

Now repeat after me Comrades
There is no God other than Gaia, and Al Gore is her Prophet.

“– the lights will simply go out here.” and the birth of the Eco-Stasi

Numerous German companies would relocate abroad if the EU fully implements its carbon trading scheme.

Numerous German companies would relocate abroad if the EU fully implements its carbon trading scheme.

The price of European emission permits is rising so rapidly that German companies are threatening to leave the country. Thousands of jobs could be lost. And the environment may, in the end, be no better off. They sat silently through two lectures, but then they couldn’t control their anger any longer. The civil servants from the Environment Ministry, the Environment Agency and the German Emissions Trading Authority made it sound easy for industry to take up carbon trading. It was just too much for the managers to tolerate. “If that’s the shape the trading will take, we will simply move our cement operation to Ukraine,” a cement factory manager shouted into the lecture hall. “Then there won’t be any trading here, nothing will be produced here any more — the lights will simply go out here.”

There will be a new ETS police force under BN1's Emissions trading scheme

There will be a new ETS police force under the regime of Brother Number One

We should take heed of what is happening with emissions trading in Europe because what happens there will be our fate as well if this country goes down the same path to economic suicide. In the absence of a global coverage it is inevitable that when faced with an unreasonable economic impediment to making a profit in one country from am energy intensive industry, for instance making cement, aluminium or steel that a company should just move to a place with less restrictions.

As i have said before Emissions Trading, in any form will only benefit shysters,  Spivs, and the government. Now there is a report in the weekend Australian that suggests there will need to be  a new bureaucracy and environmental police force (the Eco-Stasi) to administer   Brother Number One’s Emissions trading regime, This new Eco-Stasi will intrude into every aspect of economic activity to measure the efficacy of the scheme . I wonder just how long it will be before people are arrested and jailed for the too frequent breaking of wind, with out the requisite emissions permits?

Hmm, Nothing is out of the question when a  follower of the Green Religion is in the lodge…

Cheers comrades
