“Earth Hour” and the virtues of eating cake

Ah that environmental equivalent to the hate week that Orwell spoke of in 1984 is almost upon us and like hate week  its all about manipulating the feelings of the proles so that the dominate religious  ideology can be both strengthened and reinforced.  Thus when we are exhorted to turn off our lights for earth hour those of us who do not plunge our homes and business into darkness can paint targets on our foreheads for the faithful to aim at with their condescending scorn. However like a lot of religious mumbo jumbo the underlying assumption about the effectiveness of this act of environmental contrition will be grossly overstated as will the culpability of humanity for the claimed changes in the climate. With that all in mind  I found Bjorn  Lomborg‘s argument in today’s Oz most compelling:

You don’t have to succumb to the group think about the “virtue” of turning off your lights or worse yet joining in to the immoral stupidity of getting your snout into the Photovoltaic subsidy trough that drives energy costs up for everyone else. There are better ways than these empty gestures to tread lightly on the planet, holiday in this country rather than taking that jet fueled jaunt around the planet, use your appliances and cars until they are worn out instead of replacing them when the warranty runs out. Forgo the pleasures of the fashion industry by only buying new clothes when your old ones are worn out, heck you could even seek a better balance between the need to be clean and the frequency and duration of your showering. All of theses things are going to make more difference to the planet than turning your lights off for one hour, especially if you have, like yours truly, already  been using the most efficient LED lights (that use 85% less energy than an incandescent bulb )for quite some time …

Beards, and Earth Hour

Even that home of the far left opinions, the Guardian can, on occasion, come up with pieces that this conservative can agree with, and the piece that I quote below is one.

David Bellamy: admittedly not the greatest advert for wearing a beard, but at least he cares about the natural world. Photograph: David Cheskin/PA

He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man.

So said Beatrice in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and, as a long-term sporter of a full chin’s worth of facial fluff (and occasional wearer of a highly dubious “mo” for for charity), I can but agree. According to social psychologists, beards also convey a sense of authority, masculinity, strength and sincerity and once the Romans started shaving them off they quickly became associated with non-conformity.

If there is one thing that wastes both time and money it is shaving of the male face the result is rather ephemeral at best and apart from professions like fire fighting (where a good seal between breathing apparatus and the face is rather desirable) there are very few instances when the practice can be really  justified. Now If you have any pretensions about caring for the environment just think of the energy (and dare I say it? Oh what the heck 😉 ) and the amount of CO2 that will be saved by giving up the blade, I reckon that it would have to be better than supporting “Earth Hour”….

Still Pointless

GOD is green, and always has been, according to a parish in southern Sydney.

The day after Earth Hour last year, parishioners at St Mark’s Anglican Church in South Hurstville began drawing up plans to transform their congregation into an “eco-church”, and the more traditional sermon topics have had to make room for messages about global warming.

A year on, the parish is preparing to take part in its second Earth Hour, from 8pm tomorrow.

Last year when the profits* of the green faith tried to run this stunt I said that it was :

So in essence this is a feel good exercise for the would be Greenies more akin to a religious event than anything else but we all know that the global warming Hoo Har is more about religion than science. My recommendation is to ignore this stunt and in fact those of us who think that AGW is bunkum should crank up our appliances just to make use of the base load that will be on the grid any way.

Guess what? not much has changed in the last year , except there now seems to be an emerging cooling trend that may well see a radical switch in the Green apocalypse doom sayers suggesting that we are all going to freeze rather than fry….
So drag out your electric heaters and stay warm this earth hour…
