David Hicks should quit while he is ahead, or we should never forget what he was trained to do

Ah David Hicks has been in the news again. This time its all about appealing his conviction on the basis of a recent ruling about the law under which he was tried  having been applied retrospectively. Well I can understand, from a legal perspective, how that might work. However in terms of moral culpability it changes nothing Hicks admitted taking part in the Jihad game and both endorsing and physically supporting the “great man” Osama. in the letters he wrote home to his father. To my mind this makes him complicit in all of the atrocities committed by Al Qeada right up until he was captured in Afghanistan. To hear terry Hicks on the radio talking about “clearing the name” of his son was beyond obscene. The name of David Hicks will never be truly clean for as long as he draws breath even if moves in the US courts do manage to quash his conviction, that won’t make him an “innocent” man all it will do is make him a guilty man who has been able to evade justice through a technicality.

Annoyed about this Comrades

David Hicks may not be able to keep the money from his “Holiday at Club Gitmo” Book, or its about time!!!!

Ah the never ending saga of our favorite Aussie Jihadist; Yep its another story about Hicks, only this time its one which will undoubtedly upset his fan club (Hi PKD 😉  ) because it seem that the Commonwealth is finally going to seize the profits form his self-serving holiday memoir:

My only question here is why has it taken them so long to act here?

Latte Sippers™ for David Hicks!

I’m not sure which is more disturbing, the thought of fawning Latte sippers lining up to get David Hicks to sign his book or the notion that he might profit from it.

Notice too  how the Age skips over the salient fact that Hicks trained with al Qaeda  and declared allegiance to  Osama Bin laden? Hmm I very much hope that the profits from this book are seized by the Commonwealth, but I am cynical enough to expect that they won’t be because the Labor government and their masters the Greens will ensure that Hicks is able to profit from his crimes, just as they caved in to the spurious law suits from that other terrorist Mandoub Haib.

If Hicks was genuine  about wanting to put those , err,” indiscretions” behind him, then he would just look to the future and not try to profit from a very disgraceful past.

Should Hicks be allowed to keep the money from his book?

Ok, just a quicky this morning, hands up all of those who think that Hicks should be allowed to keep the money from his book?

In clause 2d of his plea agreement, Hicks agreed to assign to the Australian government any proceeds he may be entitled to, in connection with any publication or dissemination of information relating to the illegal conduct with which he had been charged.

When questioned by the US military commission, Hicks said he understood that the agreement meant he would not “circumvent this assignment to the government of Australia”.

He agreed when it was put to him that if he failed to assign any book profits to the Australian government, it would provide a basis for civil action.

Senator Brandis said the commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions should be taking legal action against Hicks under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland was last night considering Senator Brandis’s remarks.

Personally I think that every cent of any money Hicks  is given by the publishers for his self-serving book should be forfeited to the crown, in the first instance because he is seeking to profit from his vile  past and secondly because he willingly entered into a contractual agreement with the government to do precisely that.

Hicks not a hero

I suppose it should have been expected that the darling of the Latte Sippers™ would front up on the Q&A program last night , after all he is trying to promote his memoir, No I’m not talking about John Howard I’m talking about the hero of our friends with the milky residue on their top lips…

The wide-ranging interview focused heavily on the more controversial aspects of Mr Howard's tenure. (ABC)

He … received a video question from former Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks, who asked him if he stood by his support of the system that saw Mr Hicks imprisoned for over five years.

A video question from David Hicks in Five Dock, NSW: Hi, I’m David Hicks. When you were Prime Minister you left me in Guantanamo Bay for five and a half years. During that time I was detained without charge for a long time. I was denied a fair trial. I was tortured. Do you believe that I was treated humanely and that the military commission was a fair system? Thank you.

But as with many of his answers the former prime minister held firm on his actions regarding Mr Hicks.

In relation to the military commissions, we put a lot of pressure on the Americans to accelerate the charges being brought against David Hicks, and I remind the people watching this program that David Hicks did plead guilty to a series of offences,” he said.

“David Hicks trained with Taliban, David Hicks was associated with groups that were behaving in a manner that was completely opposed to the interests of this country, and the idea that we should see him as a hero is very misplaced.”

What our Latte sodden friends seem to forget is that Hicks willingly supported one of the vilest regimes in the history of the world, they deeply misogynistic, and Anti Semitic Talliban regime in Afghanistan. On top of that as a captured irregular combatant he was no civil criminal to whom the concept of habeas corpus ever applied. His status was at best problematical, and he should thank is lucky stars that he did not face summary execution.

I was willing to suggest that Hicks have an opportunity to live out the rest of his life in quiet obscurity on the assumption that he was truly contrite about his crimes and gross errors of judgement but for him to come on to the Q& A program and omit any suggestion that he was the author of his own fate in his question suggests that maybe he does not deserve the benefit of any doubt after all.

One former Green has some integrity, even if the party does not

I received an interesting email from Marit Hegge and I reproduce below her letter sent to various news outlets:

GREEN PARTY SUPPORT FOR LASHKAR-E-TAIBA MEMBER DAVID HICKS IS DESPICABLE

A while back I resigned after 15 years of membership of the Queensland Green Party. I had been a founding member, state and local office bearer, national delegate, candidate, campaign manager and office worker for that party.

My resignation related to the continuous and misguided support the Green Party has given to ex-Taliban member David Hicks. He was trained by the Pakistan based terrorist group Lashkar-E-Taiba who, it is now emerging, were the group responsible for the terrorist attacks on Mumbai. Who knows, possibly he even had the same trainer? The facts on Hicks’ terrorist training are available online at Wikipedia.

The Greens and groups such as Get Up were the major organisations lobbying for and responsible for Hick’s release from Guantanamo Bay and his subsequent release from incarceration  in Australia. They promoted him as some sort of martyr and helped him to become the cause célebre of the chattering classes. Now they are campaigning to have him live in our society totally surveillance free. They are promoting a video called “David Hicks Speaks” where he complains about the control orders placed on him.

Hicks is quoted on Wikipedia to have said he had a  “desire to ‘go back to Australia and rob and kill Jews . . . crash a plane into a building,’ and to ‘go out with that last big adrenalin rush.”

Chilling words from a former Lashkar-E-Taiba member given the attack on the Jewish Centre in Mumbai.

I have written to the Qld Green Party today and also to Senators Bob Brown and Christine Milne informing how despicable I think their continued support of ex-terrorist Hicks is.

The Green Party was set up to address the environmental crisis facing this planet, but from what I can see, they have seriously lost the plot and have become the party of the deluded and the so-called politically correct.

Marit Hegge
Ex-North Brisbane Branch Green Party member

Interesting stuff and no surprise to those of us who have for some time believed that the environmental Raison Detré of the party has been hijacked by the loonies from the far left who mindlessly support anyone who opposes the west.

Hicks off the leash

Over the years I have been rather hard line about the activities of David Hicks so the news that he is to have the control order lifted when it expires shortly makes me just a little concerned.

David Hicks

FORMER Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks is considering writing a book after he is released from his control order this Christmas, but is content for now to continue his job of potting plants in a Sydney nursery

After Australian Federal Police confirmed last night they would not apply for an extension of the control order on Mr Hicks, which includes a strict curfew and bans him from using the internet or a public telephone, he described the decision last night as “a great relief for my family and me”.

“I owe the Australian people a lot,” he said. “The decision not to renew my control order will allow me … to move on with my life. Thank you.”

The AFP confirmed late yesterday it would not renew the order, just hours after Mr Hicks launched a video appeal for it to be lifted.

The fact that he is holding down a job, has a steady relationship and appears to be doing the right thing by his kids suggests that the time might well be right to take him off the leash. I sincerely hope that his apparent good intentions are borne out by good actions for the rest of his life.

The money or the gun…

FORMER Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks will go from broke to millionaire overnight if he accepts the a huge offer from 60 Minutes to tell his story.

The Channel 9 show has put $1million on the table for an exclusive interview with the convicted terrorism supporter.

With the queue of media outlets begging to interview with Hicks first now numbering 40, his lawyer David McLeod said he had “not heard” about the $1 million bid from 60 Minutes which could trump them all.

But Mr McLeod said his client was focusing on getting his life together.

“(Hicks) hasn’t made up his mind whether or not he wants to tell his story, so no decision has been made, as far as I know,” Mr McLeod said.

Courier Mail

As I see it this story is either true, and part of a publicity campaign, for the interview on Sixty Minutes, or it is just bullshit intended to tell Davo that his story is still worth big money, I just love the way the piece ignores the fact that as a convicted terrorist Hicks would have any payment confiscated by the Commonwealth under the proceeds of crime act…. and rightly so.

In any event the public already know the whole story so my guess is that were Hicks to speak to the media what he may say would be nothing new to tell anyone .
