No? NO! not the Ten News

I was rather amused to see that channel Ten has decided to take the axe to their news services and to make some serious retrenchments in the ranks of their journalists. 150 to go and a number of their shows to be axed. As an only occasional consumer of the Channel Ten product I am not surprised the channel has been desperately seeking the “yoof” demographic. As an old codger I find very little on Ten that makes me want to watch and when they do get my attention they stuff their shows with the most crass infomercials. The now axed “Wake Up” program was like one long infomercial for utter tat.

Stepping back a bit lets consider the situation at Ten and that within Fairfax and I think that we are seeing the sad reality that  journalism is in a terminal decline. The idea that individual media entities can each have some sort of national or even global presence is an anachronism at best.  To be frank I am coming to the conclusion that we just have too much news and that it is all so similar that a culling of the mainstream will do us all the world of good.

Cheers Comrades

I don’t think journalism is dying Iain, but it is certainly changing. Whereas once you could only get news from a few sources, now you can get it immediately from a hundred different places. Newspapers, TV, etc. don’t have a monopoly on news any more. This of course means they are all making less money being forced to “downsize”. Personally I do not care much about this, as I do not have much respect for most journalists, they are nothing more than glorified typists. But there will always be a place for good journalists, who expose important stories.

As for C10, well kind of the same thing applies. There is no longer room in Australia for three commercial networks plus the ABC. There are too many other options, like Foxtel and all the things you can find on the Internet. Plus C10 is finding the same problem as other networks, i.e. that it is too expensive and too difficult to produce quality TV shows in Australia. It is much easier to buy imported US dross, make crappy reality programmes or show infomercials like you say. The quality of TV here has gone down the toilet and if one or two networks fall, then so be it. You will all just have to watch the left wing ABC!

Interesting times compared to when I grew up and all the information and entertainment came from five or six different sources. Now it is all around us.

    And isn’t that generous!

The Bolt Report: one hour of conservative TV. The ABC force-feeds us with 24/7 green leftist opinion, the rest of the FTA stations comprise Labor leftists such as David Koch, Lisa Wilkinson, Andrew O’Keefe, the Project et al.

So conservatives have one hour a week?

That must hurt, especially as the conservative side of politics won the last election.

    Suffer in your jocks!

You’re deluded, GD. Hey, if you want to watch round-the-clock hard-right-wing commentary, get Foxtel and watch Sky News. You’ll love Paul Murray.

I found the reaction on Channel 10 by Belling and Mathison to ‘Wake-Up’s demise a bit hard to swallow. Given that major manufacturing industries such as Ford, Holden and Alcoa have recently closed their doors, it’s a bit rich of highly-paid TV talking heads Mathison and Belling to wail about losing a job that had run for six months in an industry that is known for split-second axing of programs due to ratings or the age of the presenter or whatever the CEO had for breakfast that day.

Mathison is a new-comer to mainstream television, having graduated from co-hosting Australian Idol. Belling has enjoyed highly paid employment with Channel 10 for many years. Mathison seems to have rolled with the punches, while Belling is crying her eyes out.

I bet the blokes at Alcoa aren’t losing sleep over her job loss.

I watch Sky regularly. Ray, you are clearly suffering from an overdose of rabid leftist indoctrination via your ABC and Fairfax. If you consider Paul Murray to be ‘hard-right-wing’ I’m afraid there is no cure for you. Best you muddle along with your socialist ‘ideals’ while managing to turn a profit as a business owner. Bit of a dichotomy there don’t you think?

A The ABC is good enough for me————–the voice of the people.

Al Jazeera is my second choice,

You do have a problem with comprehension, don’t you GD? When I said “you’ll love Paul Murray” I was referring to his one-hour show ‘Paul Murray Live’ that regularly features a swag of hard right-wing panellists, not just to him. PM himself is a mixed bag – ie on some issues he’s hard-right while on others he’s quite progressive.

Btw, I don’t have a shred of ‘socialist ideals’ in me and I ask DEMAND (AGAIN) that you cease to make personal remarks about my business.

  10. Jeff G. says:

Even if Ray is a business owning socialist, which I very much doubt, you seem to be a quasi fascist musician, GD, which is something of a contradiction in itself.
