While Labor die-hards like our Ray are desperate to find flaws in Campbell Newman it won’t surprise anyone that when it comes to political corruption the ALP have it right there embedded in their DNA. Nor will it be a surprise that when Anna Bligh decided to sell off the state’s “family silver” that the fine old tradition of favours to “Labor mates” would be the order of the day.
Talk about snouts in the trough!
Its just another reason for my fellow Queenslanders to vote against Labor at the state election in a few weeks. They will put the fear of God into the federal party as well which may not be such a good thing as it may panic them into doing a worse job of governing the country… Hmm Hang on a minute we are talking about the Gillard government shop here which has been playing like a bad Demtel add since the last election, so maybe the Queensland result won’t make that much of a difference, after all once you hit bottom politically how much lower can they go?
Cheers Comrades

Yes Iain, the issue of lobbyists is a big one and one that only the Greens have been trying to tackle, unfortunatly, as usual, the big parties block any move to start this important democratic reform.
“The Greens want to go further, and Lee Rhiannon submitted a dissenting report urging a switch to something very close to the hardline Canadian model, in which not merely is the register legislated, applies to all lobbyists and overseen by an independent body, but also extends the register to those lobbying MPs as well as government officials and ministers and would require lobbyists to regularly disclose who they met and what was discussed. This requirement, which is now in place in the UK as well, would be a huge development for transparency.”

Sorry Craigy
but all that I can see in that is the possibility that another bureaucracy would be created to ‘monitor’ lobbyists
and it becomes a rather Machiavellian who watches the watchers, and then who watches the the watchers of the watchers, and who wa….
some how I doubt that we would be better off.
That’s pretty weak, Iain. An ex MP was a lobbyist for Hancocks? Big deal. There’s no whiff of anything here. Who else do you think would win a forestry contract – Hancocks are almost a monopoly.
Ray its strong enough to be referred to our anti-corruption mob so it might have more substance than you would care to admit.
It’s a diversion from Newman’s problems Iain. On that subject (Newman’s problems), I see he might be in trouble winning his seat:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-06/newman-refuses-to-detail-funding-for-pledges/3870804
It’d be mighty embarrassing for the LNP if they won govt without a leader! Well, embarrassing but appropriate.
Ray
The ALP are trying every trick in the book to try to stop Newman including push polling in Ashgrove but I don’t think that it will save them they are simply totally on the nose up here Ray something that you can not possibly appreciate from down your way.
The other thing to remember is that “two party preferred” means a great deal less up here because we have optional preferential voting and many votes (to say the greens) are made on the “just vote 1” principle and they simply exhaust rather than adding to the Labor vote.
Iain, read the ABC report, it’s a ReachTel automated phone poll – I don’t think robots “push poll”.
I am certainly aware of the anti-Labor sentiment up there in not-so-bright Queensland, Iain. No offence intended but the overwhelming anti-Bligh vote is more due to their resentment of Gillard and her double knifing of their favourite son, Kevin Rudd. They don’t distinguish between State & Federal issues and that has always been the case. How anyone could want Newman instead of your outstanding and courageous Anna Bligh is beyond me – the lady derserves to be named a National Treasure but no, you’ve got ‘National Treasure’ Clive Palmer up there. Wow, what an arrogant fruitcake he is.
Anyway, it’ll be poetic justice if Newman loses his seat (or fails to win one). He’ll be the laughing stock of the nation and known as ‘the man who would be king who couldn’t even get to square one!’ LMAO.
And you now have two reasons to actually like Gillard:
1) Her knifing of Rudd (twice) ensures the ALP will lose the next Fed election (if she stays)
2) Likewise it ensures Bligh will lose.
It would give Ray and I a laugh if you were wrong two elections in a row Iain….I wish your pride good luck…
Sorry, he’ll be known as:
