When I was very much younger if you you wanted to create a composite image you had to do it either in the darkroom or more likely by the old-fashioned cut and past method and to do it well took a great deal of skill. Now with even the most basic “photoshop” program anyone can create very convincing fakes, Heck I have had some created by the trolls who seem to hate this humble blogger so I do appreciate how hurt and angry you can feel but I also know just how hard it is to do anything about it.
ACTRESS Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, has called in lawyers over a nude internet image that her representatives swiftly branded a fake, The Sun newspaper reported today.
Representatives for Watson, 19, said the image, the location of which was not revealed by The Sun, was a computer creation.
Now of course the end of the piece does say “the Potter star is a favourite subject for those who seek to manipulate images on the internet.” But the rest of the piece does give the impression that a fake nude of Emma Watson is unusual enough to warrant calling in the lawyers. But if you do the simplest Google search (with safety protocols off) then you will find that there are many thousands of images that purport to be Ms Watson nude.
More than eighty thousand images according to the search counter. So this leads any reasonable person to the conclusion that the entire news item is in fact something of a beat up. There are “fake” nudes of just about any public persona that you can think of posted on the net but their sheer ubiquity means that the credibility of any claims about real celebrity nudes is called into question and when it come to the privacy of people like Emma Watson that may not be such a bad thing. HBO’s “Rome” makes it very clear that the pornographic depictions of the rich and powerful is not a new invention the only new thing is the way that such images can now be extremely realistic.
I think that the character played by Watson in the Potter films is a very good one and I hope that she inspires girls like my daughter to be smart and strong in the way that they face life’s adversities but there is no getting away from the fact that Emma Watson has grown into a very handsome young woman and boys being boys she will be a focus of their sexual desire and it that desire that is manifested in those more than eighty thousand images on the net. Maybe we can even see that it is a good thing that creators of such imagery find the strong, smart and unpretentious character played by Watson sexy and desirable because that is far better than our young men learning to desire the female stereotype that relies upon the surgeon’s knife and the products of the Dow corporation.
