Million dollar riff???

Just a little Musical exercise for a wet Sunday morning .

As popular music is constantly feeding off itself I just have to wonder if the Rogue Traders will find themselves in the same boat as Men at Work  with a writ for copyright infringement? Because there is no doubt at all that the Rogue traders have pinched the guitar riff from the Elvis Costello song.

Cheers Comrades

    Forgot this one Iain ?

No Len I remember it well and I admit invoking it for this post ;)

What a load of rubbish, Rogue Traders have not “pinched” anything. Voodoo Child samples Elvis Costello’s riff. It was done with his consent and he is credited as co-songwriter. It would be nice if you could do some elementary research before accusing artists of plagiarism, otherwise the only person being sued might be you.

Welcome to my blog “RT Fan”
Funnily enough the song writing credits are not included on You tube but thanks for letting me know how that stands.
My post is not at all about making any accusation and I use the word “pinched ” in the most colloquial manner to discuss the way that contemporary music appropriates from the back catalogue of all sorts of songwriters.and recording artists.
I am sure that with loyal fans like you that your favourite band will continue to be popular.
Oh and please don’t raise the spectre of litigation unless you actually intend to issue a writ because it makes you look very silly. No band is going to waste resources trying to sue a blogger who discusses one of their songs in a less than favourable light, it would cost heaps and only generate lots of bad publicity.

You alleged that the riff was “pinched” (i.e. stolen) and you also alleged “copyright infringement” when there is none. The usual response of decent civilized people would be to say “Oops, I got it wrong, sorry”.

As for the Rogues sueing you, I doubt they’d bother. They’re too busy being successful and you’re too busy being a blogger… :P

let me point out some simple semantics for you because I expect that Music is more your thing. My comment apart from the Embedded You tube clips was this:

Look at my first sentence I am not making any sort of allegation of copyright infringement but I am considering the use of Costello’s riff in the light of the recent case where Men at Work have been successfully sued for referencing “kookaburra sits in the old gum tree” in their song “Downunder” I was also thinking about the way that George Harrison was sued over the tune he used in “My Sweet Lord” In this day and age when music is literally everywhere it is really almost impossible for something truly unique to be created.
For the record (pardon the pun) I don’t mind the song “Voodoo child” but I just like pump it up better.

Yes Iain – ‘pinched’ is a very collaquial English term misunderstood by Aussies like RT Fan here, and if I had accused someone of pinching something back in Blighty, I wouldn’t be accusing them of stealing something.

    Of course not…
