Father’s day thoughts

As I am the first to rise everyday in this house there is absolutely zero chance that I will be having breakfast in bed this or any other fathers day, That is however of just about no consequence to me because I am fairly sure that I am doing the right thing by my children and that I am providing them with a foundation of good moral behaviour that will enable them to become valued members of the communality and of Australian society in general.

No matter how much I want to pat myself on the back for my parenting experience I can’t help keep from thinking about   this story of two boys who have been allowed to run riot with an almost complete lack of any parenteral control. Their thuggery was allowed to continue until they badly hurt two younger boys, one so badly that he nearly died. Yet they will receive no significant punishment and will be granted life long anonymity.

Cock of the wall: Despite their tender age, the brothers were feared. They are likely to be free at 18 and given lifelong anonymity

The sadistic young brothers who tortured two boys almost to death will enjoy lifelong anonymity.

The pair are likely to be freed from custody within six years, before they reach the age of 18.

Then, say lawyers, they are likely to be granted the same freedom from identification given to the two boys responsible for the 1993 killing of two-year-old James Bulger.

The brothers, aged ten and 11 at the time of the attack, are housed in separate secure units where every comfort is provided for them – costing taxpayers more than £420,000 a year.

As part of their rehabilitation they are offered a range of activities including dance classes, cooking lessons and computer games.

The mother of one of their victims, from Edlington, near Doncaster, said she was disgusted that her taxes would be used to give ‘these nasty boys the best education’.

The brothers will be sentenced in six weeks for the offences they have admitted – attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, inciting sexual acts, and robbery.

As in the cases of the Bulger killers Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, and of the 1960s child killer Mary Bell, lawyers will ask for a ruling that the names of the brothers should never be made public.

While dewy eyed lefties may get terribly upset about the fate of day old cocks they seem to be just as ridiculous when it comes to the punishment of horrible boys who obviously have no remorse.

Officials had hoped that the brothers’ violent behaviour would improve when they were separated from each other.

But the pair have been instigating fights with other inmates and bullying them, a source told the Mail last night.

Their attacks prompted staff at each centre to remove the boys’ privileges, including the use of a television and computer games, as punishment.

‘They haven’t changed a bit,’ a source told the Mail. ‘They’re not humble or remorseful – they just see this as an opportunity to be bullies all over again, but with the luxury of nice meals and new TVs.’

Although huge amounts of money are poured into their rehabilitation, more than 78 per cent of children released from custody reoffend within 12 months.

Like a lot of young thugs these two seem to have learned that they can get away with just about anything, they obviously know the system and how to work it to their advantage,  but more importantly they know that having no moral compass apart from self gratification works for them and the lily livered lefties have jumped to their defence because they are “children”.

British law allows for “children” to be sentenced to substantial periods of imprisonment when they have committed horrible crimes  but the judiciary seem to be unreasonably squeamish about actually doing so.  Sadly like the father of these boys , those  judges are failing society.

What are the chances that these boys will ever be “re-habilitated” when they have not in fact ever been “habilitated”  in the first place.

I can’t help thinking that these two boys are likely to be life long offenders but it saddens me greatly that they will have to hurt someone else before they will receive the sort of punishment that they so clearly deserve.

Now I just have to go and hug my kids….

The “rights agenda” overwhelms good sense

According to some people this is a picture of a real woman after gender reassignment surgery.

According to some people this is a picture of a "real woman" after gender reassignment surgery.

You have to wonder why the keepers of Her Majesty’s fine hotels should be obliged to entertain the fantasies of convicted killer rapists, and why that same rapist should be allowed to fulfil their “sex change” desires at the tax payers expense?

A transsexual prisoner serving life for manslaughter and attempted rape committed while she was a man has won a high court battle to be transferred to a women’s jail.

Deputy judge David Elvin QC quashed a decision by the justice secretary, Jack Straw, to continue detaining the 27-year-old, referred to only as A, in a male prison.

The judge said the refusal was a violation of her human rights. He said: “I declare her continued detention in a male prison is in breach of her rights under Article 8 [right to private and family life] under the European Convention on Human Rights.”

The judge was told that steps had been taken to transfer A, described by her lawyer as “a woman trapped inside a man’s body”, to a female prison “as soon as possible”.

Phillippa Kaufmann, appearing for A, told the court: “The transfer should be effective in a few weeks.”

Kaufmann had described at a recent hearing how, although apparently born male, A had her womanhood recognised by law and her birth certificate had been amended to show her female sex.

Surely the  health care obligations of any prison service should not extend to such elective procedures that are not treating a life threatening illness. Now if some poor deluded fool in the wider world wants to mutilate their bodies (at their own expense) that is their right but once they are doing porridge then they should not expect the government to either support or finance follies like this. they should wait until they have done their time and save up their money for the “op” just like every other deluded “transsexual”.

Shed dreaming….

My modest shed

My modest shed

Yep its almost fathers day and to my fellow dads out there may your progeny appreciate you enough to enough to give you a gift that is useful in your own part of the place, yep I’m talking about the shed, where a bloke can be himself and pursue his own interests and passions…

The shed

by John Williamson
Hey, did you ever wake up in the morning
On the wrong side of the bed
I bit confused and yawning
You go straight out the back to your shed
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed
A place where he can go, somewhere to clear his head
To think about the things his woman said
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed
A joint to learn to read an’ write, to work on his bike at night
To grow up as he likes, to grow anything under lights
A place to keep his tools, nuts and bolts and drills
To hang a hide, to hide the dry or hang to pay the bills
Well my old shed, she leaks a bit, the roof is caving in
Nothing that a bloke can’t fix with a few spare sheets of tin
The beams are old telegraph poles, white ants have eaten them
She creaks and sways on windy days and leans towards the sound
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed
At the back of the shed where the dogs are fed near last years bails of lucern
Sticky tall green leaves came up from thrown out seeds
All it took was bantam poop, I watered ‘em once and they grew some
They should be prime ’bout Easter time if no nosy neighbour steals ‘em
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed
To weld up broken gates, a place for all his mates
To come ’round Sunday arvo’ for a gin
A place to make a racket, to find the pipe and pack it
To think about the things his woman said
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed
Yeah, all Australian boys need a shed

Well what could be more Bonza than the words of John Williamson’s immortal ode to the shed? As regular readers will know I used my shed and its treasure trove of tools to build may car but most blokes seem to find a sort of Zen like peace among the spanners and things that “will come in handy one day” and you can tell a lot about a bloke by looking at the contents of his shed.

But in a sign of optimism, Queenslanders plan to spend an average of $1083 buying tools and equipment for their sheds over the next year.

The first BankWest Shed Index also finds the average Queensland shed and its contents are insured for $18,350 – the highest amount in the nation. In a sign of optimism with Australia’s world-beating economy, Queenslanders plan to spend an average of $1083 buying tools and equipment for their sheds over the next year.

Ahead of Father’s Day, the index finds that 90 per cent of primary shed users are men, and more than half of them are highly territorial about their male-only domain.

The report also reveals the humble shed might be good for relationships.

Three out of four Queenslanders say their partners don’t mind “shed time” while 12 per cent report it was actually good for their relationship.

The shed is also a great motif to apply to fathers day because is you are a bloke without a shed what sort of example are you presenting to your children? Without a shed how can you inspire your children to be resourceful and good users of tools? My daughter is sadly uninterested in the mystic arts of the shed but when my son comes up to me and says “when I am am ten and I learn how to weld I am going to build a robot” I just know that I must be doing something right.

If you had to chose between Neil and Neal…

I know that I should be be all bluff and bluster  about the sanctity of marriage but I can’t help taking just a bit of pleasure in the woes of the ALP in NSW and being a normal bloke when it comes to the either or questions inherent in any sex scandal. Personally I think that it should not matter a jot who anyone chooses to bed and that extends to politicians. However seeing that the minister has fallen on his sword it is interesting to see just who it was that tempted him to “play away”.

So if  it boils down to a choice between the two ladies who would you chose? And would a little of the old rumpy-pumpy with the rather attractive Ms Neil be worth the wrath of the far from sanguine Ms Neal?

Something for us all to ponder over our coffee.

Brother Number One and sin

One of the key features of the nanny state is the way that the “do-gooders” seek to invade every part of a persons personal autonomy “for their own good” No where is this more evident than the policy development unit that is concerned with grog, Ciggies and convenience food.

Brother Number One will ensure that all Aussies get fit by rigidly supervised exercise programs

Brother Number One will ensure that all Aussies get fit by rigidly supervised exercise programs

It also recommended:

• The phase-out over four years of the marketing of fatty foods before 9pm on free-to-air and pay television, with laws to be introduced from 2014 if the industry fails;

• The average price of a packet of 30 cigarettes to rise to at least $20 within three years – the first excise increase in a decade.

• Plain packaging for cigarettes and restrictions on the number and type of outlets where cigarettes can be sold.

• Phasing out alcohol promotions in areas that attract people aged up to 25 years.

• Consideration of new liquor taxes and the introduction of a floor price to discourage alcohol abuse.

• Health advisory information labelling on containers and packaging of all alcohol products; and

• Special licensing conditions for late-night and high-risk outlets.

But apart from the Big Brother and big stick approach, people will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own health.

I can’t help wondering just how far this sort of state meddling in the way that people live thier lives is going to go , how long it will be before every poor sap will have to do their callisthenics routine in front of the view screen?

I just can’t stop being entirely cynical about the sort of sin taxing being proposed by this report. Quite simply I don’t think that it will make a scrap of difference to consumption but it will swell the coffers of the government and provide the pretext for more and more intrusion into the lives of people by the government. How long will it be before we all have to have a government approved “body mass index” or its off to the ” exercise” camps ? How long will it be before it be comes a criminal offence to be” wilfully in possession of a Burger and fries”?

Hmm I don’t know about anyone else but I am rather concerned that the sanctimonious religious zealots who are driving the millenarian green  cult  won’t be satisfied until no one can enjoy their lives and that we will be obliged to have or daily two minutes of hate, not for Goldstein , but focused upon “Ronald MacDonald”.

Minister MIA

I used to love bushwalking until I injured my back in a motorcycle accident and I found myself unable to carry a big pack any more, but I have the greatest respect for anyone who takes on the harder walks around this great country. Once you walk in the sort of conditions reported in this little corner of Victoria it takes a certain type of toughness that is easy to respect. That respect comes from knowing that anyone out and about in that country is betting their lives against their skill and the quality of their equipment.

Rescuers set off to search for missing Victorian MP Tim Holding. Picture: Simon Dallinge

While we have concerns for his safety, we continue to be optimistic, and we are doing everything we can to find him,” he said.

“We have now got over 80 searchers in the area around Mount Feathertop looking for the minister. They plan to search until as late as they can this evening and then to camp on the mountain. He’s experienced, he’s well equipped – hopefully he’s been able to hole up somewhere and get out of the worst of the weather – and if that’s the case, hopefully he can survive for quite some time up in that terrain.”

Premier John Brumby said he and his colleagues were deeply worried about Mr Holding but remained hopeful.

Obviously this is a story that can have a happy out outcome but the longer that the Minister is missing the more that we should be concerned. However lets take heart from the fact that we still live in a country where a state minister can actually “get away from it all” without having to have an armed escourt and long may it be so.

PS rumours that a new Russian stealth air ship is in the area are entirely untrue.
