There is just no accounting for bad taste now is there?
Readers may remember that I was, hmm, shall we say less than enthusiastic about the film “Australia” but I find the thought that anyone would want to see it more than once rather disturbing.
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in Australia.
Cleveland local Joyce Woodward has racked up a mammoth 27 viewings of Australia at the Victoria Point Birch Carroll and Coyle cineplex. That’s 80 hours of sweeping outback epic.
It’s understood that the cinema manager has joked with the super-Luhrmann fan, saying they should have waited to tell anyone how much of a fan she was until she got to 50 viewings.Joyce replied that if the film is on for long enough, she probably will.
Lets hope that the cinema management will put this poor woman out of her misery and cease screening that rubbish before the woman’s soul is irrevocably destroyed by the evil influence of Baz’s flickering images….
You know it makes sense Comrades

27 viewings of ‘Australia’ at say about $20 a pop = $540 US. That’s half way to affording a ticket out here to see what Australia is really like and how the film has got it all wrong.
I saw the film ‘How the west was won’ on TV the other day, I didn’t watch it this time – I have seen it before.
It had all the great Stars and Directors (three I think) of the time, including John Wayne and John Ford.
It was/is a very popular film (not like ‘Australia’) but my point is, that no-one who watches that film thinks it a historically accurate portrayal of settlement of the Western parts of the US.
Big blockbuster films like these are entertainment first and foremost and to dislike a film because of some political Ideology is just plain stupid.
This woman obviously likes the film.
There is nothing ‘evil’ about it. I think you’re just joshing Iain but I know you and your ‘Bolt Think’ TM, Which tells you that anything that displays the history of Aboriginal dispossession and abuse under European settlement must be wrong. Even if this were the case, you can still enjoy the movie for its romance and great scenery.
Really, if you think this film ‘evil’ then what about ‘Rabbit proof fence’? Would you like it banned or a disclaimer at the head with words like;
‘WARNING -Highly respected Journalist Andrew Bolt has deemed the historical points portrayed in this film to be evil and a danger to the white European culture that has given us such a successful country and should not be viewed by anyone who reads a News Limited newspaper’
Have you seen “Ten canoes” Craigy? Now that is a far better film about northern Australia and indigenous culture(and I loved it) than Baz’s epic and it was made with a tiny fraction of the budget.
Oh and you might want to take on board the notion that I sometimes type with my tongue firmly in my cheek when I do things like refer to Baz as “evil”….
Oh and on “Rabbit Proof fence” I think that as films go it ain’t that bad, But its historical accuracy , like any work of fiction is highly debatable.
Just to clarify, when I said “the film has got it all wrong” I wasn’t referring to the story line. I just think it’s over-the-top and poorly cast. Hugh Jackman? That’s a reason NOT to see a film.
Yep, I think I got the ‘I’m only joking’ vibe…
I have not seen ’10 canoes’ (I don’t watch films much these days, I’d rather be fishing) but it has been recommended to me on more than one occasion.
I’ll take your word and try to see it soon.
Ray – it seems there is a consensus in this country that it is a crappy film (Baz’s ‘Australia’) but not for the reasons that rightists point out.
I got the DVD from my public library Craigy so you should be able to get it easily enough
