more illegal emigrants detained attempting to get to Australia (file image)
Well this one makes boat number three and there is still a bit more than a couple of months of the calendar year to go so there is every possibility that we may see even more attempts to use crappy old Indonesian fishing boats to try to enter Australia illegally.
SIXTEEN Sri Lankans and four Indonesians have been detained in East Timor over a plot to illegally sail to Australia, authorities say.
The men were arrested in Betano village, on East Timor’s south coast, while preparing to board an Indonesian fishing boat.
Officials said the men had admitted they were planning to travel to Australia.
“Some of them say they (were trying to) enter Australia to look for jobs,” said Boavida Ribeiro, deputy director of East Timor’s immigration department.
The Sri Lankans were believed to have entered East Timor overland from Indonesia, while the Indonesians sailed the boat from Betun in West Timor, Mr Ribeiro said.
“It was a small boat (and) in poor condition,” he said.
The men are being held by police in the capital, Dili.
Hat tip to
Leon Bertrand
With the first boat that arrived on Brother Number One’s watch I was very cautious in suggesting that the softer approach of the new government may be a factor, with the second I asked could this be the beginning of a trend and now that we have a third I feel vindicated.
Cue the usual leftist nonsense claiming that a softened policy on illegal arrivals has made no difference.
Cheers comrades

sooo two less than last year
As i said in the post a couple of months to go in 2008 if they keep turning up with this sort of frequency….
…
then it will be a downward trend
The policy was only changed a few months ago. So that’s 3 boats in a small handful of months.
That would make for an annual rate of about 10, no?
Yep Leon you’re right, the answer is no.
Craigy,
Can you explain how your reasoning differ to mine, rather than just stating that you think I’m wrong?
Once again, your approach comes off as extremely dogmatic.
