Loonies in lycra

I  live on a mountain and it has rather pleasant scenery that makes the drive up and down that makes one take a deep breath and believe that the world is a wonderful place.

However it is so often the case that when dirving on the mountain road I am confronted by endless hoards of loonies in Lycra.

It is usually when one is acending the mountian that they are most annoying , like sheep they are a herd animal ,and you may encounter mobs of them panting as they pedal furiously to try to conquer the force of gravity .Now this is not such a big deal most of the time but fate being what it is the day you get caught behind a herd of them will be the day that you are in a hurry to meet the school bus and on days like that I tend to think that perhaps their numbers should be reduced by some judicious culling…

Just join the polic force and ask them for some ID Iain. If they have none, you can ‘legitimately’ shoot them! :)

  2. Iain says:

Are you in need of an “e” PKD?

  3. PKD says:

Yes, that should be ‘join the police farce’! ;)

Perhaps there should be an editing tool where you can login and fix your own typos after posting.

Heck that’d stop the ‘you kan’t spel’ type posts for good!

    Wishful thinking I guess.

That’s eerie…we just got home from a drive in the country and guess what was causing traffic snarls? (on otherwise beautiful clear, open road)

    Yup–loonies in Lycra. grrrrrr…….

  6. The Editor says:

Yeah, ‘cos I’ve never been nearly killed by loonies in cars while riding my bike around town.

    Never.

And just something I noticed, Iain. Not to be the spelling police but rather more of a public service… You’ve got two different spellings for “indigenous” in your categories listing — both wrong. “Indegenious” and “indigenious” both make me feel like I’ve got indigestion.

I bet you’re using Internet Explorer. Why not download Firefox and take advantage of its inbuilt spell checker? Even if it does suggest American spelling.

The species Loonius Lycraious are less of a problem in their more common urban habitat, where they don’t tend to flock together as they do on their periodic rural migrations where ,like mice, they cease to be cute once their numbers increase to plague proportions.

  9. The Editor says:

But the risk posed by each group to others is disproportionate. I come terrifyingly close to being seriously injured or killed by motorists quite regularly while you suffer little more than an annoying delay to your journey.

Thanks for the update on my categories Scott That is a result of importing properly the posts from my old blogs, you import them and the categories all go to the side bar. I will look into fixing it :)

Scott you do realise that this is meant to be a rather light hearted post don’t you?
I am a very cautious driver who tries to show other road users every courtesy but on my mountain road I have seen so many lycra loonies doing things like failing to signal intention, riding three and four abreast blocking the entire lane, riding in the middle of the lane around blind corners; I could go on and on about the way they are a pain on the road to other people but I am sure that you are well aware of the way cyclists “bend” the provisions of the traffic act.

  12. The Editor says:

I can totally understand how packs of cyclists can be a real nuisance on the road. A few months ago a pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a pack of riders in Melbourne. Inexcusable in the extreme.

Probably a bit unreasonable on my part but as a cyclist who rides alone to get places rather than in packs to get exercise, I find it hard to feel any sympathy for motorists who bend the provisions of the traffic act (e.g. opening car doors into oncoming cyclists’ paths) and risk my life every time I hit the road.

  13. Iain says:

The road that I frequently travel is populated entirely with the exercise Junkie types rather than cyclists, like yourself who do it to actually go places, something I have a great deal more respect for.

    RE. The Editor vs. Iain

I sympathize with The Editor on this one. Particularly the bit about people opening doors on you (Chapel St’s the worst). But I gotta say the Lycra pack thing always looks really naff (I never wear lycra). Don’t they ride single file?? Just a personal thing but I hate riding in tendem it’s really frustrating and makes me feel like a herd animal.

Seperate bike lanes needed. Melb’s good that way.

PS Your nemesis seems to have some kind of difficulty I’ve looked up his site and get some kind of Bible sales thing instead.

  15. The Editor says:

Check your URL, Adrien. If you type blogpsot instead of blogspot you’ll get the god botherers.

  16. Keith says:

I try very hard to show cyclists courtesy and consideration, but where we live they seem to have a holier-than-thou attitude and think that their pack behaviour ought to be acceptable because they’re being healthy and environmentally conscious and all that.
Lots of ad campaigns telling motorists to show cyclists consideration. Stuff-all telling cyclists to behave considerately though. It’s no fun coming around a bend and finding a pack of 10 or more cyclists spread right across the lane.
Just like motorists, cyclists have their share of idiots.

Good to meet someone who shares my love of cyclists.

Whilst I do not really want them dead, I do think they should be prosecuted and gaoled for their offences against the rest of us.

  19. Iain says:

Oh I know that they are such a pest species around here.
Cheers and welcome to my blog.;)
